THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA AT MUTIANYU IN AUTUMN & WINTER
Mutianyu is the longest fully-restored section of the Great Wall open to tourists. With 23 watchtowers, a cable car, chair lift and toboggan and less crowds than Badaling, Mutianyu is definitely a great section to experience.
Chinese: 慕田峪 / moo-tyen-yoo
Distance from Beijing: 73 km (1 1/2 hrs drive)
Hike: All around one hour to climb around 4,000 steps
Cable car up & down: Single trip is CNY80 or CNY100 for return. Takes you up to watchtower 14 where you can then walk to watcher tower 23 which is the most authentic part or to watchtower 1. If you decide to take the toboggan down you will need to purchase 2 different tickets.
Chair lift up & toboggan down: Single trip is CNY80 or CNY100 for return. Starts at watchtower 6
Best time: Spring and Autumn. Winter can be chilly with a strong wind. Aboid May Day holiday (May 1st-3rd) and National Day Holiday (October 1st-7th).
